Chicago Cubs hope to get bats going in game two
The Chicago Cubs play game two of their series with the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight in Phoenix. Last night’s game resulted in a 3-1 Cubs loss. The Cubs bats were mostly silent, with only four hits, including one coming from starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano. Zambrano left the game in the seventh with a 1-1 tie, but reliever Carlos Marmol could not keep the Diamondback scoreless.
While I expected a good outing from Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb, I really expected the Cubs to be able to get something going offensively. The power that they showed in the month of September was non-existent and the Cubs must realize that they need to put more than one run on the board to be successful in the playoffs.
Although the Diamondbacks were worried prior to the star of the series that Chase Field would be “Wrigley Field West,” the Diamondbacks fans were out in full force and it did seem for the most part to be a truly home-field advantage. Of course that could be because the Cubs fans did not have that much to cheer about for the majority of the game.
There is some controversy swirling today about whether manager Lou Pinella should have kept Zambrano in the game longer than he did. Many believe that the reason that he took him out was to save him for gave four, because the Cubs are going with a three-man rotation. That reasoning is a bit suspect, though, where the Cubs are not even guaranteed a game four until they put a win up on the board.
Tonight’s pitching match-up will feature two left-handed pitchers, with Ted Lilly for the Cubs and Doug Davis for the Diamondbacks. The game starts again at the horrific hour of 9:00 p.m. central time.
